Vanalden Cave
If you are looking for something short and sweet, you may want to look for Vanalden Cave. This is located near Tarzana, and it is one of the most jaw-dropping sites near the Santa Monica Mountains. The cave itself is relatively small, but it is not a sight you will want to miss.
The hike to the cave itself is less than a mile, and it only has approximately 100 feet of elevation change; however, if you want to extend the hike a bit, you may want to explore the entirety of Vanalden Trail which is about 1.5 miles long.
Serrania Ridge Trail
One of the most popular trails in the local area is Serrania Ridge Trail. It is located at the end of Desoto Avenue and provides free parking.
There are a few steep hills along the way, but you will be treated to a jaw-dropping view of the unparalleled San Fernando Valley. Unfortunately, the trail doesn’t have a lot of shade, but as long as you wear sunscreen and bring plenty of water, you should be fine. You can also start the hike early in the morning or later in the afternoon to avoid the heat. You can find the start of the trail at 20864 Wells Drive in Los Angeles. The Trail itself is approximately 1.3 miles long.
The Top of Topanga Overlook
From Topanga Canyon Drive, you will be treated to amazing views of the Santa Monica Mountains and the San Gabriel Mountains. The entire hiking area is approximately nine acres, and you have plenty of trails from which to choose. In addition, the park has plenty of benches, drinking fountains, and picnic areas. You can find the overlook at 3400 North Topanga Canyon Boulevard.
